Easy Popcorn

Did you know that you can make your own microwave popcorn at home with just a few, simple ingredients?  It’s super easy, super yummy, and less expensive than buying the pre-packaged varieties.

Here’s how:

First, melt 2-3 tbsp butter in a glass bowl in the microwave. One minute works for me, but microwave temps vary so start off with 30 seconds and then 10-15 second intervals from there until melted.  You do not want your butter to explode in the microwave, trust me on this.  Once melted, set aside.

Second, place 1/3 cup popcorn kernels in a brown paper lunch sack.  Drizzle a tbsp or two of olive oil, additional melted butter or coconut oil over the kernels.  Fold the top of the bag down a few times and give it a shake to distribute the oil.

Third, set the bag on a microwave-safe plate and place in microwave.

Fourth, set your microwave to cook on high for two- to three minutes.  Do not use the pre-set popcorn button.  Again, cooking temps will vary so listen to your corn popping.  It is finished when there is a second or two of silence between pops.  I cook mine for about 2 1/2 minutes.  It may take a few batches to figure out the right time for your microwave…..remember, start off on the low-end, as it’s easy to go from yummy popcorn to burned, stinky popcorn.

Last, carefully open the lunch bag (hot steam alert!!!) and pour in to large bowl.  Drizzle melted butter over top and stir well, then salt to taste.

This makes four to five one-cup servings.

I haven’t tried to double this recipe so I can’t say how it would turn out if you did.  But this is the perfect amount for our family to crunch on a small bowl of popcorn while watching a movie.
